You’ll thank me for this one day son

Butterflies and Wheels have a link to this article about punishing children.

The article itself is a pretty good one written by a sensible vicar who of course condemns the “spare the rod, spoil the child” approach.

It’s funny though how we have invented a word to describe the practice of hitting children, we call it spanking. Spanking sounds harmless, probably something you get for being a cheeky chap and this is probably why the word is dangerous. Better to simply be honest and call it hitting, not spanking. Consider these two sentences.

“My son is a glutton and obeys not his parents, I shall hit him.”

“My son is a glutton and obeys not his parents, I shall spank him.”

Maybe it’s me but the second one sounds less nasty even though they both describe the same action. Some kid getting the trashing of his life.

Have a look at his article, it’s got some quotes from a pretty scary book for parents who want to beat some goodness in to their children.

Thanks for pointing out the brutality of “spanking” kids. Hitting is hitting and violence only begets violence. Its a never ending cycle that only gets worse.

Thanks for stopping by Fed up. Yeah, hardly a great lesson to teach kids.
